A recent Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) brief highlighted VIVID as a promising tool for using artificial intelligence to advance nutrition. VIVID, short for Virtual Violations Detector, is a virtual assistant that scans websites, social media channels, and shopping platforms to identify advertisements that violate the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes (BMS) and regulations regarding tobacco and alcoholic beverages. The brief noted that the tool has been well received by Viet Nam’s Ministry of Information and Communications and Ministry of Health. In 2022, VIVID scanned 35,790 posts in Viet Nam and detected 3,922 BMS code violations, 550 tobacco advertising violations, and 298 alcoholic beverage advertising violations. Violations are consistently documented and used as evidence to advocate for more robust monitoring and enforcement of global and national BMS marketing codes.
According to the brief, the SUN Civil Society Alliance Viet Nam is planning to work with the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Ministry of Health to help ensure VIVID's impact is sustainable and to expand the tool to cover marketing of sugar-sweetened beverages.
