Frequently Asked Questions

AI tool development process and methodology

1. Why are all the promotional posts being monitored in English?

As a ‘pilot’, we wanted to first build a VIVID Global tool using the International Code and relevant WHA resolutions as benchmark and monitor in countries where promotion on digital platforms is mainly in English. We decided to build the global tool in English first during our beta phase, so it would be easier to adapt it to other languages later. However, the VIVID tool for Viet Nam is built in its national language and based on the Vietnamese national regulation.

2. How are countries identified for AI detection in the beta phase?

During the initial development phase, we consulted partners and Code advocates at national level, and shortlisted the countries that: a) fit the criteria addressed in Question 1, and b) where digital marketing is rampant. For Nigeria, digital marketing is becoming more popular, and we wanted to see whether early intervention such as AI monitoring would help prompt proactive regulatory efforts. For Vietnam, the tool was adapted into Vietnamese, based on the national regulations.

3. Why are there not more countries included in the beta phase?
The number of countries included in this phase is also constrained by the number of social media pages our AI data collector tool can ‘crawl’ (also known as ‘social media scraping’) before it gets blocked by social media platforms. We maximized the number of countries within the limited number of pages an AI tool can crawl.

4. How did you decide which companies to monitor?

We consulted partners and Code advocates at national level, and studied existing Code monitoring data, and identified companies and sites that are more active in digital marketing. Same reason as the number of countries, the number of companies we monitor with VIVID is also constrained by the same reason addressed in . We will be reviewing our monitoring list every quarter and will be adding more companies according to feedback from partners and users.

5. How long is this beta phase?
We plan for this beta phase to be around six to nine
months. Go here to see why it is necessary.

How to use VIVID

The list of violations provided by the VIVID Global tool is by no means exhaustive. At this stage, we wanted to suggest the prevalence of inappropriate marketing on digital platforms in select countries from a number of companies, hoping these examples can indicate the magnitude of the larger situation. It is complementary to ongoing monitoring in countries, and should not replace it.

6. I see over 10,000 entries from different countries, but I only want to focus on violations collected from a specific country. What do I do?

Under “Auto-detect violations”, you will see different filters. Go to “Country”, select the specific country, hit “Apply”. At this time, the VIVID Global tool is only limited to Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Nigeria, Philippines, Singapore, UK, and USA. For violations in Vietnam, please go to VIVID Vietnam, separate from the VIVID Global tool.

7. I see so many companies, but I only want to focus on violations from a specific company. What do I do?

Under “Auto-detect violations”, you will see different filters. Go to “Brand/Company”, select the specific company, hit “Apply”.

8. There are violations from certain companies I cannot find on the VIVID auto-detect list. Why?

At the moment, the number of companies we monitor with VIVID is constrained by the same reason addressed in Question 3. We will be reviewing our monitoring list every quarter and will be adding more companies according to feedback from partners and users.

9. I find some inaccuracies in how VIVID is identifying violations. What are you doing to improve the accuracy?

With AI, it is an ongoing process of machine learning. We have built a model that allows the machine to auto-detect likely violations, but ongoing human review and verification are necessary to ensure the machine improve in its accuracy.

10. I am not finding the violations from a certain company VIVID is monitoring. Why?
Our VIVID tool occasionally needs some time to work its way through certain sites and pages, depending on how the pages being detected are built and structured. It is an ongoing learning process. Please be patient and check back in a few days. Also, you can actively participate in teaching our machine by submitting examples (either links or images) to our database.
