Average alcohol consumption in Viet Nam is the third highest in Asia and among the top 10 globally. Alcohol’s affordability, driven by the rising purchasing power of the country’s expanding middle class, contributes to this trend. Despite the Law on Prevention and Harm Control, alcohol brands advertise widely online and on social media.
At a plenary session on digital marketing at the 7th Global Alcohol Policy Conference in Cape Town in October, the Innovations Incubator at FHI 360 Global Nutrition presented the Virtual Violations Detector, or VIVID, an artificial intelligence-powered application designed to help government officials enforce digital marketing regulations. Developed with support from the Innovations Incubator, VIVID has detected over 1,000 violations of alcoholic beverage advertising laws in Viet Nam since its launch in 2021.
At the conference, both multilateral and civil society organizations expressed interest in scaling up the application in their respective project countries and regions.
